Plan. Prepare. Paint.

Writer: Vanessa CooperVanessa Cooper

If you subscribe to my newsletter or follow me on social media you already know that I will be focussing on Canal Art throughout 2025 when it comes to painting. My first workshop this year will be Canal Roses in February followed by Canal Castles in March, both of these will take place at Brook Arts Hub in Shottery.

I realised the other day that I always say I teach 'traditional' canal art but that's not strictly true because, until my home studio re-opens, I am teaching this style in acrylic paints when traditionally it should be painted in enamel paints. I do use the traditional colours though and follow the rules for roses.

Although you will often see roses arranged in very similar ways, there isn't really a right or wrong way to lay them out. This is one of my arrangements for a workshop, but there are many other options.

Now, although castles also have a few some rules, they are often very simple in their design and, unless commissioned, don't usually relate to any particular building. The images below are examples: 1 & 3 Fred Worthington, Wendy Eriksson (taken from the internet), 2. Painted by myself in a class with Terence Edgar.

However, I am standing on artistic licence with my castle design and have chosen to simplify an image of an actual castle, one that is close to home and that is Warwick Castle.

Living so close I just had to attempt this. I found a perfect image and chose a part of the castle with towers, printed it in black and white then went ahead and canal-ised it (my new word 😂). I may still tweak it a bit, we'll see.

So I have planned. I have prepared. But I'm afraid you're going to have to wait until next week to see how the paint stage turns out.

I'll be back soon.
